Living In Paris? A USA Hijabi POV

There are many things that come to mind when I think of Paris. When deciding where to go for my study abroad program, I immediately thought of Paris. It was mainly because of a childhood aspiration and an admiration for the artistic culture. I was not yet a Muslim when I made my selection.  I converted to Islam a few months before my departure. During that time, I began to wonder if I had made the correct choice.  There was no going back on my decision, and I resolved to carry out God's purpose for me.

It's been a great surprise to have arrived here. So, if you asked me if you should travel to Paris wearing a hijab, I'd say sure! If you intend to travel, research is essential; but, never put off visiting a place you've always wanted to visit. Make your experience by praying for ease and discernment. As a Muslim, make sure you're familiar with the laws and culture ahead of time. If your surroundings impede you from presenting yourself in the way you want, leave. Never give up your identity.

As a recent convert, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of hijab sisters in Paris. Everywhere you look you see a muslimah. It was lovely and made me smile, mashallah. It's amazing to see sisters immersed into the city. No matter where you go, Allah is with you. If you are interested in the artistic culture of Paris, you should visit. Furthermore,  for reasons that can assist you better academically or professionally.

Paris is like any other popular city, and as a foreigner in the city, I have had no problems. It is critical, though, that you find a community or participate in a program. I can't speak to travelling to the city when you don't have any resources. My days are largely spent with friends. It is safer and easier to have a program with Parisians ready to keep you informed and available to discuss.

Do not be afraid to visit Paris if you are a sister who is not a minor. Arrive in the city prepared, knowledgeable, and accompanied by friends, family or a reliable group. Under these conditions, I sincerely advise coming and achieving whatever goal you have in mind.
